The Ivy Room Back in March, I visited the Ivy Room soon after its redesign and re-opening. Since then, they have added specialty cocktails to their full bar, and whichever bartender has developed them deserves a raise! Sure, a full bar ensures you can always get your favorite drink when you want it, but I

Drunken Horchata Dos Perros Dinner Review, Brunch Review Downtown Durham $9 This horchata, Kraken rum, and Licor 43 drink is a vast improvement over its predecessor, La Leche, which I tried over a year ago at Dos Perros. What’s the difference? Only the Licor 43 and a larger serving. It’s possible that the rum has

One of my New Year’s Resolutions this year was to spend less money on alcohol. While you might think this would cut down on my wine and cocktail reviews, I refuse to let it! Reviews of cocktails from nearby bartenders will, indeed, be less frequent, but I plan to fill that void with cocktails of

Margarita Torero’s 15-501 and Garrett Road, Durham Website Torero’s house margarita comes in four sizes: regular, macho, grande, and gigante.  This is a regular size glass: Believe me, the gigante glass was terrifying to behold. Torero’s makes their own margarita mix and on first sip, it was sweet, and I feared too much so. Subsequent

Monty Python Spritzer Nantucket Café, Durham Website This was a simple bubbly cocktail, served with lots of ice. Prosecco, St. Germain elderflower liquor, and a dash of club soda united to create a drink with a mild beige color near the bottom. The sweet, floral flavor of elderflower was the most present component – perhaps

Dykki Whiskey Five Points, Durham This colorless cocktail was made with Plymouth gin, St. Germain elderflower liquor, Lillet Blanc, and an absinthe rinse.  It smelled of both licorice and pine trees.  The elderflower liquor gave a hint of sweetness to the drink and the Lillet Blanc provided smoothness.  These two elements combined made the gin

Sazerac @ Whiskey Five Points, Durham $12 Whiskey’s Sazerac is made with Jim Beam Rye, Peychaud’s bitters, and simple syrup.  The key to the drink, though, is the absinthe rim the glass is given before the rest is poured in.  Its licorice notes dominate the smell and initial taste; as I love absinthe, this is

Shiki Sushi 207 W Highway 54 Homestead Market, Durham http://www.shikisushionline.com/ I am an unabashed fan of Shiki Sushi.  Their intriguing deluxe rolls, relaxing atmosphere, and fantastic selection of non-sushi items never fail to leave me well-fed and happy.  But there is the occasionally squeaky wheel and at last night’s dinner, it was the Shiki Tini.
