The Vibe: Bun Appétit takes up a corner spot in a busy shopping and residential center. The décor is modern, with a bright to-go counter and tables available outside by the rock fountain.

I appreciated how the baked goods are displayed by different courses, some marked for breakfast, some for dinner or dessert. At the time of this writing, they had a selection of specialty donuts dubbed as suitable for afternoon tea, as well. Those included the Jardin fraiche, which was glazed with a honey lemon crème fraiche, filled with herbed cucumber cream, and topped with a radish flower. In other words, this place is fancy.

Brioche donuts are the specialty here, whether raised and shaped into a ring or rolled in sugar and filled in the malasada style. Croissants are available at the weekends, and you may find a few other types of pastry like biscuits or danishes. Or order sweet and savory toasts, along with a wide range of coffee and tea-based beverages. The beverages do take some time to prepare.

A few flavors of donut I did not try on this visit include Irish cream, churro dulce de leche, Biscoff cream, and tiramisu. An excellent reason to go back!

My Take on Bun Appétit #

The Food: The bakery offered more savory items than I expected, so I started with one of those, as I had not eaten anything that day.

bun appetit everything roll donut

The “everything roll” donut’s top half is covered in tasty, fresh toppings that, unfortunately, fall off easily. Eat it tilting one side up if you can! I’d have liked more green onion in the cream cheese, and wow, there was SO MUCH CREAM CHEESE. It does approximate the everything bagel experience well, but with a much higher cream cheese-to-bread ratio than normal. Tasty, but too much.

I’d recommend eating the passion mango donut with a fork. It’s so messy, but the vibrant, bold flavors of the passionfruit filling, mango glaze, and coconut panna cotta were awesome. The donut had a good amount of filling, not overwhelming like the everything bagel’s cream cheese. Nice bite to the jellied mango bits on top, too.

I contemplated whether the passionfruit mango donut's toppings were overkill . . . Nah, they just made the donut that much tastier to consume. 👍 The coconut’s velvety texture contrasted nicely with the punchier tropical flavors.

I also got the mocha bun, which is another brioche-based pastry. Its crackly top layer reminded me of the freshest conchas and was texturally pleasing. Though it’s a light filling, that smattering of extra bitterness and chocolate and the bun's buttery richness levelled this treat up in memorability.

The bitterness of coffee and dark chocolate came through. Despite the donut bevy, the mocha bun may have been my favorite option at Bun Appétit.

The Drinks: I also enjoyed a dalgona coffee. If you missed this pandemic trend, dalgona coffee is basically whipping up instant coffee with cocoa powder, ice, and the milk of your choice. Of course, a spot with as much panache as Bun Appétit has to top that off with broken honeycomb—an inspired addition, honestly.

bun appetit dalgona

Do you see how well that dalgona holds its shape? SO FLUFFY. Bun Appétit is exceptionally good at making this drink, but do be sure to mix up the ingredients to get the proper blended taste.

Would I Go Back? Yeah, totally. Bun Appétit is going to make my sweet-treat decision-making difficult whenever I head to Fremont to pick up hot tub supplies, as it’s even closer than Pie Dreams to that shop. I normally stop at Pie Dreams for a slice or three. What will I do next time?! The gauntlet is thrown!
