The Vibe: Caesar’s Chicken is within walking distance of my house, and you can bet that every time I’ve passed that chicken mascot, I’ve wondered what it’s like inside. Somehow, it’s taken me 5 years to walk through those doors!

This to-go spot has served up fried chicken, spaghetti, and garlic bread since 1964. I believe the owners have changed over the last 50 years, but according to the website, the fried chicken recipe has remained the same. Yelp and Google reviews are full of long-time Hayward residents talking about eating here all their lives.

Many combinations of fried chicken, spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread, fries, and other sides are offered along with family packs, of course. You can order chicken pieces à la carte or upgrade to a chicken breast for $2.00. Don’t like spaghetti? Ravioli is also available, and the green salad’s dressing has many admirers, per the reviews.

My order took 10–15 minutes to fry up fresh. I opted for the 2-piece “snack,” upgraded to a breast from a thigh, added a pint of spaghetti, and ordered a quarter-loaf of garlic bread.

My Take on Caesar’s Chicken #

The Food: I was so impressed by the garlic bread’s strong garlic aroma and its huge size!

If that’s a quarter loaf, how big is a full loaf!? Biting into it, I was surprised to taste sourdough. Fresh garlic, herbs, and paprika were used generously. The coating tasted more like liquid fake butter to me than the real deal, but the flavor was good, and the bread itself was great.

I admired the rich red coloring of the spaghetti sauce. It had a comforting flavor and was well-seasoned with chili flakes and oregano simmering along with finely minced beef. Some folks complain online about the liquid pooled at the bottom, but that just reminds me more of my mom cooking spaghetti dinner at home. It may not be an authentic nona’s bolognese, but it’s still nostalgia in a bowl.

The fries served in the 2-piece snack were unremarkable, but upgrading to curly fries is cheap. I’ll consider that on my next visit. The chicken, however, is absolutely worth remarking on!

I loved it! The coating’s texture is somewhere between Shake ‘n Bake and large crisp chunks. So…small crisp chunks? The seasoning’s great; it could be just salt and pepper, but they do not skimp on the pepper. I’d bet there’s garlic and onion powder in there, too. It’s a nice blend, and the meat was tender, juicy, and just plain good for both the breast and drumstick.

Would I Go Back? I was surprised by how easily Caesar’s Chicken won me over. Unless I’m aiming for a spicy chicken sandwich, I can’t see any reason at all that I’d head to the Popeye’s or KFC down the block instead. Obviously, I need to try more of their sides, and I’m not likely to crave the spaghetti. But that bolognese was more robust than I expected. And the chicken? I’ll be craving that, for sure. I am lucky to have it so close!
