Obligatory disclaimer: These wines were free samples for my review. Sera Fina Cellars, founded in 2010, is an Amador County winery owned by Paul Scotto, the chief winemaker behind the Scotto family’s growing portfolio of wines and ciders (my previous reviews). Sera Fina Cellars focuses on Italian and Rhône winemaking styles and varietals. I tasted

KickAss Britchen Red Paso Robles, CA Non-vintage $29 The KickAss label invokes the lighter side of winemaking for AronHill Vineyard’s owner, Judy Aron. The back label declares its inspirations proudly: “Life is all about ASS. You are either covering your ASS, laughing your ASS off, kicking ASS, kissing ASS, busting ASS, trying to get a

Zinfandel is the best grape out there, as far as Duane David Dappen, owner and winemaker of D-Cubed Cellars, is concerned. As he’s been making wine since 4-H club, he’s had plenty of time to make up his mind! Duane worked at other esteemed wineries early on in his career, but making zinfandel under the

Vale do Bomfim 2015 Red Wine Blend Douro, Portugal 13.9% ABV I’m about to leave for the 2017 Wine Bloggers Conference in Santa Rosa, and I thought, before I take off, I’d post one of my regular features since I started this blog in 2007: the simple wine review. Wine blogging has changed a lot

In May, the Association for the Promotion of Wines and Spirits in North America (the APVSA, based in Montreal) came to San Francisco on their spring tasting tour–the Wine Not! Tour. As a member of the new media, I was invited along to taste the wines they sampled for potential distributors, importers, and retail clients.

Obligatory disclaimer: Left Coast Cellars provided these wines for my review for free. My experience with Left Coast Cellars (website here) is not a long one…but it has certainly been a fruitful one. And I didn’t even intend that to be a wine pun. Ivy Hover is Left Coast’s marketing director, an A+ person, and my

Comique Revolution Blanc 2010 Central Coast, CA Look at this — another wine that won me over with its label artistry! I’m so predictable. This time, that art is an alluring blend of golden tones with black lines portraying some odd lords and ladies along with exclamations that they had to “cut the fluff!” apparently

Espiral Vinho Rosé Gaia, Portugal Apologies, but I have no wine label to share with you. This is a bottle I picked up at Trader Joe’s — hopefully, that helps if you’re interested in it? Espiral Vinho Rosé is a rosé version of vinho verde, and I was super excited to see it. I love

Alexander Valley Rendition Zinfandel 2009 Sonoma Country, CA Strawberry and nectarine simmered with nutmeg are the most prominent smells from this leathery red wine. It smells sharp, full-bodied, and young.  Strawberry remains when drinking it, but the spice is more akin to allspice. It tastes a lot lighter than it smells, and eucalyptus and brown

Epicurio 2008 Primitivo Di Manduria Vendemmia Apulia, Italy The nose of this wine made from a relative of the zinfandel grape is full of rich milk chocolate truffle with a hint of raspberry. The smell makes me rather excited to drink it, I must say, as truffles with raspberry are my favorite ratings, after all.
