Marqués de Cáceres Crianza 2006 Cosecha

Marqués de Cáceres Crianza 2006 Cosecha Rioja, Spain Everything I like about Spanish wine is in this glass—spicy, leathery, fruit that is ripe to bursting, cayenne, maybe even a mild curry. The first notes, though, were of chocolate and raspberry.  The chocolate’s mostly from the nose, but it helps mellow the wine, almost giving it

Novella Synergy 2008

Posted in : Other Red Blends, Red Wine on by : The Gourmez

Novella Synergy 2008 Paso Robles, CA This is a very smooth blend of bunches of varietals. The nose smells richly of ripe strawberries and blueberries. There’s a hint of spice. It’s a lightweight wine and easy to drink. Tannins are light, and the strawberry is in full effect when sipping, with a small amount of

VINTJS Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

VINTJS Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 Napa Valley, CA A pleasant wine with a good amount of flavors mingling together–the spices are in one corner and the fruits in another. Boysenberry, lots of boysenberry, with a little currant to give it a kick. The spice flavors swirl through it like a cinnamon roll, consisting of cinnamon (who

Augey Red Bordeaux 2007

Posted in : Bordeaux - Red, Red Wine on by : The Gourmez

Augey 2007 Bordeaux France This is a subtle wine with a lot of flavor, which may be a contradiction of sorts. It’s full of fruit–the fruitiest wine I’ve had in a while, truth be told. It’s also pretty thick. I like the simple berry goodness; there’s a smorgasbord of blackberry, raspberry, and strawberry all begging

Redwood Creek Pinot Noir 2009

Redwood Creek Pinot Noir 2009 Modesto, California, bottling of French grapes This pinot has a nose of blueberry, teriyaki, vanilla, and cardamom, and even though I don’t like blueberries, it smells like it’d be a great sauce for duck or a thick steak. When sipping, the element of spice is the most pronounced. The cardamom

6th Sense Syrah 2005

6th Sense Syrah 2005 Lodi, CA Lodi does wine? Who knew? Not this uncultured gourmet, apparently. Also, the back of the bottle has a somewhat gruesome poem about being buried in a barrel of wine. I think it’s meant to be metaphorical, but I don’t really want to imagine someone in the vat this came

Camelot Cabernet Sauvignon

Camelot Cabernet Sauvignon California What’s that, you say? Where’s the year? No vintage for you who are so conditioned to expect silly information such as dates with your wine. No, Camelot Cabernet Sauvignon does not wish for you to predispose your tastes with preconceptions of what years might make a good wine. You must drink

Darien Tempranillo 2008 Riojo

Posted in : Red Wine, Tempranillo, Wine on by : The Gourmez

Darien Tempranillo 2008 Riojo Logrono, Spain This Spanish red rises to the roof of my mouth right away. There’s some pucker for sure, too much for me. I taste orange, currant, and leafy bitter greens. I don’t like drinking it; it’s not full enough or balanced enough for me. No nose to speak of.
