Cozymeal’s German Currywurst Dinner

Last Thursday, I was a guest in a beautiful apartment on Telegraph Hill for dinner.

Situated right near the top of the Vallejo Steps, the home was full of art painted by our host’s girlfriend. Kristie. You can see a few of those paintings behind fellow guest and food writer, Marcia Gagliardi, the mastermind behind tablehopper.com, in this photo.

A nearby garden had frequent feathered visitors, and my hosts said the legendary Telegraph parrots often appear as well.

The table was set for a German feast that would consist of currywurst, potato salad, and a green salad.

It was the makings of a comfy and stimulating night out, and it was all courtesy of Cozymeal. As mentioned in my previous post on this new dining company, Cozymeal matches up patrons with both professional and home chefs who open their homes for intimate—and affordable!—dinner party settings.

That evening, Cozymeal co-founder Arnie had us out to try the experience and share it with you. Arnie’s German feast is only one of many menus Cozymeal offers, but if my Facebook feed after posting pictures is any indication, there is definitely a clamoring for currywurst. Arnie and Kristie were gregarious hosts, keeping us entertained with stories and plying us with mimosas upon entering.

Normally Cozymeal dinners are BYOB, but with two imbibing food writers on hand, Arnie and Samad knew what to do.

To serve the sausages as fresh as possible, Arnie set out to the grill as soon as we’d arrived. With all the greeting, hosting, and mimosas, dinner wasn’t quite served until an hour later, but that’s all part of eating in someone else’s home. It’s a relaxed experience—don’t come expecting to be waited on hand and foot or to have the meal ready precisely when you ring the bell. Come expecting to actually hear your friends and to avoid the pressure to leave your table as soon as you’ve finished eating.

Once those sausages were cooked, we discovered Arnie had made three platters of currywurst: one of fresh pork sausage, one of beef bratwurst, and one of Italian-style vegetarian sausage.

The currywurst had a great kick to it, making sure you knew it wasn’t any ordinary tomato sauce.

The shaved and fried onions made a great textural companion to the heavy sauce and savory meat.

The green salad was simple and pleasing.

But the potato salad, in my opinion, was the star of the evening.

The potatoes were cooked just right, leaving enough firmness to make them interesting and enough starch to grasp onto the light dressing. I especially enjoyed the shallots and gherkins sliced into the mix. They livened up its flavors remarkably well.

Kristie also surprised us with freshly baked chocolate cookies. She and Arnie effortlessly circled each other all night, making sure our plates were always full and showing off impressive saran-wrap skills before sending us home with leftovers.

Between the delicious German spread and conversation fostered by the inclusive atmosphere of a welcoming home, I had a very pleasant evening.

Most of all, though, I’m amazed by how affordable this dining experience is. You won’t get it as cheap as I did (insert obligatory FREE! disclosure), but Arnie’s dinners only cost $15. And you’ll find that most of Cozymeal’s menus are far more affordable than you’d expect for this sort of personal service.

Although Cozymeal has only been operating since December, it’s easy to see how they’ve already garnered so much success and thus are looking to expand into ever wider neighborhoods in the Bay and beyond. They already have dinner options in Berkeley, San Leandro, Millbrae, and Oakland. So go ahead, give their in-home dining a try. It’s not like it’ll cost you more than dinner out on the town.
