Momokawa Pearl Sake

Momokawa Pearl Sake
Junmai Ginjo Nigori Genshu
Oregon

This sake is nigori, so it’s unfiltered, and I’m happy to report that it doesn’t taste like sour milk like the Snow Maiden nigori sake did. Instead, it’s got a delicious creamy flavor of banana, breadfruit, and a bit of kiwi. There’s a strong floral element also, which I’ll dub lavender. Definitely enjoyable and I will drink it again, with pleasure.

GANBEI!

Wow. This is amazingly gross. Starts ok, but has a strange metallic twinge at the end that spoils it.

The Adventures of KiwE and Boo

We’ve tried several sakes and this one is one of the best. We first tried unfiltered sake at Benihana in Japantown (San Francisco) and loved it instantly. It has a cloudy appearance. It’s sweet, creamy, full-bodied, and very yummy.

Decentered Doctrine

A beautiful, shimmering white color, the unfiltered sweet sake was soft and smooth with overtones of melon and apple. At 18% alcohol (where the others were 14.8%), the Pearl is no chic drink. It may be soft and sweet, but it packs a punch with about the same alcohol content as a ruby port. . . the Pearl was a velvety, sweet blanket covering our tongues . . . It was the perfect end to a wonderful meal.

Pearl is a terrible Nigori…try the stuff in the smaller green bottles…clean, lightly sweet, slightly creamy, not affected by other flavors…well chilled

Hmm, it’s always possible that my expectations were lowered because the last nigori I tried (Snow Maiden) was really gross for me. Where do you find the ones in the little green bottles? I’d love to try them.

check either in Whole Foods Durham, or at Sam’s Quick stop–this is where i usually find it. I’m sure total wine or some place of the like will have it. Ozeki (sp?) and Tanaka?(sp for sure) are the more common ones. Chill, shake well…

I’ve just found that those nigori’s that come in the larger americanized wine-sized bottles are just not as clean tasting, and the flavored ones just seem silly to me, given that it’s lightly sweet and creamy in and of itself…

and let me add…I did not mean to come off so snooty!…lol

I love the small bottles; I just never buy them because my wallet always tells me it’s not a good enough deal. Down, wallet, down! I will have to try one soon.
