Kiuchi Yuzu Wine—Wine Review

Kiuchi Yuzu Wine
Japan

Yuzu is a citrus fruit native to Japan. I’ve never tried yuzu wine before, or even yuzu for that matter, so this glass will be my first impressions of both.

The color is a pleasant gold with some peach highlights. The nose is strong, sweet, and reminds me of peach again. Or perhaps the smell is of yuzu? Imagine that.

For me, this is definitely a dessert wine. It is very pleasant and complex. The alcohol seems strong at first, but it mellows quickly and is followed by a smooth, honey flavor, then lots of different fruit notes: tangerine, lime, kiwi. It’s a thin-bodied wine, which gives it character as so many dessert wines are quite heavy. I found it light, airy, and delicious and can’t wait to try it in cocktails from my Japanese cocktail book.

Other Bloggers’ Thoughts:

Yeah, about those . . . none were found. There’s mentions of it out there, but nothing I’d call tasting notes or a review.

Is this hard to find? What kind of cocktail would you serve this as? I love Mojiots–any luck with this sort of concoction? It sounds good and I’m not a huge dessert wine fan.

I found it in my local wine shop, so you may want to check yours–I don’t think it would be that hard to find. If they carry sake, they may carry this, too, since it is made by a big sake house in Japan. Cocktail-wise, I could actually see it being a good addition to a mojito in place of the citrus you would add, just a splash or two would do well, I think. It’s not an overpowering flavor, but you probably wouldn’t want to add more than that. Otherwise, I think it would probably go well as an addition to a more flavorless base alcohol like vodka. I haven’t tried it in a cocktail yet, but I definitely will next time I buy a bottle.
